Sleeping Beauty

A king and queen were without child
They wished for one a long long while
A small green frog with promise came
They'd have a child – Briar Rose by name

The child was born, she was so fair
Her parents were a joyful pair
They then prepared to celebrate
This precious baby's birthday date

Twelve fairies were invited to
Attend the celebration new
The thirteenth uninvited was
The reason why was “just because”

Each fairy came and blessed the girl
Their promises they did unfurl
The eleventh one was through
When in the thirteenth fairy blew

Her anger went from bad to worse
Instead of blessing she did curse
The tiny child so pure and clean
To die when she became fifteen

A spindle would her finger prick
She'd fall asleep and die real quick
The fairy laughed beside herself
But then came fairy number twelve

“This girl won't die, but sleep,” she said
She'll lie down in a tower bed
“The only way she'll wake from this
Is when there comes a true love's kiss.”

The king and queen became real stern
And ordered every spindle burned
They thought if spinning they'd deprive
They'd surely keep their girl alive

The young girl grew so fine and fair
With beauty that was pure and rare
She was kept so strong and safe
Within the castle's well locked gate

She wandered free from hour to hour
Then one day she did find a tower
Right up the stair well she did go
So that its contents she would know

Up at the top inside a room
There was a lot of sheep's wool strewn
An aged woman also there
And for a spindle she did care

The princess had not seen this thing
And knew not what would fortune bring
She did not know it was bad luck
When she reached out the spindle struck

And then the maiden closed her eyes
One hundred years before she'd rise
And all within the castle deep
Did also close their eyes in sleep

A thorny briar grew up around
Surrounding all and kept them bound
Within the walls and not much more
Was heard the sound of sleeping snore

And every now and then a knight
Would try to hack through with his might
Alas the briar would win the day
And hedge his path and block his way

The story spread both far and wide
Of castle with all trapped inside
And of the beauty of the maid
Who high up in the tower laid

A hundred years did finally pass
And came a knight to woo the lass
He drew his sword to rule the day
But found the briars and thorns gave way

When he cut through to castle gate
And found that all in sleep did wait
He quickly looked the tow'r to find
Which held the princess so confined

Then up the stairs he quickly stepped
While passing all the folks who slept
He found the maid so fine and fair
And knelt beside her way up there

And then upon the beauty's lips
He gently placed a perfect kiss
The lass awoke and all the court
Did all arise within the fort

And so the prince and princess wed
And all the people their lives led
Their joys and blessings they did reap
For they'd a hundred years of sleep.
