Hansel and Gretel

A man who lost his lovely spouse
Did bring a new one to his house
But for his kids she would not care
And did not like them living there

She told her husband to get rid
Of both of his unwanted kids
She bid him take them to the wood
Where surely they'd be lost for good

Well Hansel heard what she had said
While he was laying in his bed
And Gretel too had heard about
Her want to move the children out

The children thought to make a plan
Of how they could come back again
They gathered lots of whitened stone
To mark a path they'd follow home

Their father took them out to play
Out in the forest in the day
When the night time came around
Their dear old dad could not be found.

“Oh Hansel dear, what shall we do?
How to get home, there is no clue”
“Oh I know how to get home right
I've dropped some pebbles that are white.”

And so they found their way back home
Their Father was so glad they'd come
But Step-Mom had another view
And her dislike of children grew

The next day they went out once more
With food and drink for lunch they bore
Young Hansel had a loaf of bread
Along the way some crumbs he shed

But soon the day turned into night
The darkness made them shake with fright
Their dad left them away he sneaked
The crumbs that dropped now did they seek

Their eyes along the ground did scour
But birds the breadcrumbs did devour
Deep in the forest they did roam
While lost and searching for their home

Then next day to their huge surprise
A candy house stood 'fore their eyes
As hungry children often do
The broke off pieces they could chew

“Oh nibble, nibble little mouse
Who is that nibbling on my house?”
A voice they heard came through the air
From where it came, they knew not where

A witchy woman then appeared
Who right at first the children feared
She told them that 'twas okay to eat
The candy that did taste so sweet

The kids she asked to come inside
The thinness of their arms she eyed
She then continued more to chat
About some ways to make them fat

And then she burst into a rage
And put poor Hansel in a cage
She then told Gretal she would jump
To bring him food to make him plump

Each day inside the cage she checked
The witch did Hansel's arm inspect
She had poor sight and wasn't quick
So he held for his arm a stick

“Oh Nibble, Nibble, skinny mouse
You need to gobble on this house
I do not know why you're so thin
You should have double on your chin”

And then one day she lost her cool
And after Hansel she did drool
The oven she did quickly heat
'Cause she'd decided him she'd eat

She opened up the oven door
The hot air from the stove did pour
Young Gretal cried, the witch yelled “Shoosh”
Then Gretal gave a great big push

The witch went in right where she looked
And in the oven witchy cooked
Young Gretal slammed the door shut tight
With all her strength and all her might

She ran and let her brother out
And from that house they headed south
They found their way back to their home
From which they hoped to no more roam

Their father greeted them with joy
Both Gretal girl and Hansel boy
Their mother wasn't there that day
She'd left for good and gone away.

Their daddy really was their friend
And now this is this story's end
They smiled and giggled with some laughter
Then lived happily ever after
